Death Penalty v. Abortion

What do you all make of the contradiction inherent in both liberal and conservative positions on abortion and the death penalty? That is, the contradiction in being pro-choice and anti-death penalty or anti-choice and pro-death penalty? Personally, I believe that only the latter is a contradiction as life does not begin until birth, though others would disagree.
